This week’s Scrapbook Live project takes inspiration from a design featured on the Creative Memories Blog. What stood out to me is how it showcases two things most of us scrapbookers have plenty of—decorative mats and borders! With just a few trims and layers, you can turn these stash items into a page that’s fresh, fun, and full of personality.
A Fresh Way to Use Creative Memories Mat Packs
Creative Memories mats come in a variety of styles—some feature full-sized artwork or titles across the entire 6.5 x 4.5 mat, while others have smaller artwork designed so the mat can be cut in half to create two decorative pieces. For this layout the second style of mat is utilized – full sized mats are cut in half and used as design elements. It’s such a clever way to stretch your supplies—you instantly double the number of mats you can use and open up new shapes and arrangements. Whether your mats are themed, tonal, or bold and colorful, this technique builds a unique backdrop that frames your photos beautifully.
Scrapbook Border Options Galore
The design also makes room for plenty of borders, which is why I’ve nicknamed it a “mat and border happy layout.” You can mix and match laser-cut borders, stickers, or punched borders to create balance and interest. Choose borders that complement your photos, or play with contrast for a more dynamic page. It’s also a great chance to finally use some of those favorite border punches sitting in your tool collection.
One Page… or Two
While the blog example shows this as a single-page layout, you don’t have to stop there. The structure expands easily into a two-page spread if you need more photo space. You can also work in Peekaboo Pockets™ to tuck in a few extras without overwhelming the design.
Adaptable for Any Theme
The best part of this project is how adaptable it is. By switching up the mats and borders, you can make it work for holidays, travel, heritage, or everyday stories. It’s simple enough to recreate with any collection while still giving you a polished, layered look.
