Got Extra Mats? Let’s Use Them Up!

Can I be honest with you? I think mats might be one of the most UNDER-USED supplies in a scrapbooker’s stash. You buy a collection, you use the papers, stickers and embellishments — and somehow you end up with a pile of mats just sitting there. Sound familiar?

In this week’s edition of Scrapbook Live, we are tackling that mat pile HEAD ON! I am sharing a simple, beautiful one-page layout idea that is perfect for using up those extra mats you have hanging around — and the whole thing comes together faster than you might think. I know you all love two-page layouts, so I will also share how to expand the design into a second page.

The layout is inspired by a design from the Creative Memories blog, but here’s the thing — you do NOT need that specific collection to make it work. This is all about grabbing the mats you already own, mixing and layering them, and creating a page you’ll absolutely love.

Here’s why mats are SO perfect for this kind of layout:

Mats are designed to layer! That’s literally what they’re made for. By stacking a few mats in coordinating colors or patterns, you instantly get depth, dimension, and a polished look — without a lot of effort. Add a few photos, a decorative border, your stickers, and you are DONE.

This layout works for ANY photos — vacation pics, family moments, birthday memories, everyday life. If you’ve got mats and photos, you’ve got everything you need.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • How to layer mats to create a layout that looks like you worked WAY harder than you did
  • How to add decorative details that support your photos
  • Photo placement tips

Download your free handout below — it includes a photo of the inspiration layout plus step-by-step instructions you can adapt to whatever mats and papers you have on hand.

Dig out that mat stash and join me LIVE on Friday, March 7th at 3pm ET / 12pm PT on my Facebook page! Let’s get those mats OFF the shelf and ON the page! ?
