A Scrapbook Design That Keeps Coming Back
Five years ago, I shared a layout inside my VIP Customer Facebook group that unexpectedly found its way to Pinterest. Every so often, I get messages asking how to re-create it. The challenge? This project pre-dates my habit of making printable handouts for all my designs, so the only instructions lived in a private Facebook post.
This week I decided it was time to bring the layout out into the open—and give it a proper handout—by featuring it in a Scrapbook Live episode.
The Illusion of Interlocking Corners
I call this layout the Interlocking Corner because of the way the paper strips overlap and weave together visually. It’s not a complicated technique —it’s just careful layering that tricks the eye into seeing an interlocked design.
The effect frames your photos beautifully while still leaving plenty of open space in the center of the page for a flexible photo arrangement. You can easily adapt the layout to suit the number and size of photos you’d like to showcase.
Materials and Options
The handout for this project includes a cut guide showing how you can trim all of the required strips from a single sheet of paper. If you’re someone who loves to use up scraps, this layout works equally well with pieces you already have on hand.
TIP: I recommend using non-directional paper for the 1″ strips because some will sit horizontally on the page and others will sit vertically.
Looking for an extra touch? Instead of using the 1-inch paper strips, try swapping them for punched borders. This variation adds extra texture and detail without making the design more difficult. During my Scrapbook Live demo, I’ll be showing this option so you can see just how much versatility this design offers.
Why I Love This Layout
- Simple construction – no complicated measurements or specialty tools required.
- High impact – the interlocking illusion looks like it took more effort than it really does.
- Flexible photo space – plenty of room in the center to customize your photo layout.
- Scrap-friendly – works just as well with leftover strips as with fresh paper.
