Scrapbook Live – Creating a Page Mat with Knockout Style BMCs

The Layout

I originally created this two-page layout for my customers as a way to showcase a fun but often overlooked technique — using a knockout-style Border Maker Cartridge to create a decorative square page mat that becomes the anchor point for your photos. I use 2×2 squares in various paper patterns to create a mosaic border along the outside perimeter of the base page and then layer the page mat on top, allowing the colors of the squares to show through the punched page mat.

This technique is incredibly versatile. You can use bold cardstock for dramatic contrast, tone-on-tone papers for something softer, or even repeat the square mat on both pages for a cohesive two-page spread. No matter the theme, the decorative square pulls everything together and gives your photos a polished, intentional frame.

Some examples of knockout-style Border Maker Cartridges include:

  • Zebra Stripe
  • Confetti (used in video demo)
  • Mosaic Diamond (used in sample)
  • Tire Tracks
  • Banner
  • Cyclic Circles
  • Bats & Stars
  • Ancient Key
  • Stars
  • Music Notes
  • Footprints
  • Linear Plaid

Let this be your nudge to pull out those Border Maker Cartridges and try something a little different with them. They’re not just for straight borders — they can be powerful design tools when you think beyond the edge.

The Video Demo

I use the (retired) Party Time collection in my demo layout along with the (retired) Confetti BMC.
