Why I Love Angles in Scrapbooking

I am sure you are not surprised when I say how much I like working with angles. When I sit down to brainstorm layout ideas, one of my first questions is often: “What if I cut this in half?” That is usually followed by: “What if I cut this in half on an ANGLE?”

This little thought process is what sparked the design I’m sharing in this episode of Scrapbook Live. Angled cuts can create such a dynamic effect on a page, and the best part is that they work with any collection. Whether you’re using bold patterns, subtle tonal prints, or solid cardstock, angled pieces add movement and interest.

The Flexibility of the Design

Another reason I love this layout idea is its versatility. You can mix and match papers from multiple collections to coordinate with your photos, or stick to one theme for a more unified look.

The background of the layout starts with a 6 x 10” rectangle. From there, you can vary the widths of the strips that cover it—narrow for a sleek look or wide for something a bit more eclectic. No two pages will look alike, even if you follow the same basic formula.

My Arizona Diamondbacks Inspired Layout

For my demo page, I wanted to scrapbook photos from a recent Arizona Diamondbacks MLB game that I attended with my family. Since Creative Memories doesn’t currently offer a baseball-themed collection, I leaned into tonal papers and cardstock to reflect the team colors: teal, cranberry, gray, black, and white.

I loved working with this color palette—it felt sporty, bold, and perfect for the energy of the game. This just goes to show that you don’t always need a themed collection to scrapbook a specific event. Sometimes, the right color combination does the job beautifully.

Adding the Border Element

To finish the design, I included a border that stretches across the bottom of the left page and the top of the right page. For this, I used the retired Chevrons Border Maker Cartridge, which added a playful yet structured detail that tied the two pages together.

Of course, you don’t have to use the exact same border element. Any punch, border strip, or embellishment that matches your theme will work here. Think of it as the finishing touch that brings balance and polish to the angled layout.

Why You Should Try This Layout

If you’re ever stuck for ideas or just want to shake things up, ask yourself the same question I do: “What if I cut this on an angle?” It might be the spark you need to create a fresh and exciting page design.

This layout is simple enough to repeat, yet flexible enough to customize endlessly—making it a great go-to technique for your scrapbooking toolkit.
