A Bold Yet Simple Layout

The Poolside Paradise collection from Creative Memories is full of playful patterns and soft colors. It’s perfect for documenting summer fun. However, the real star of this layout from the CM Blog is the tile-patterned paper. By using tiles as a base design element and then layering in additional decorative papers, the page really pops and provides a strong foundation for your photos.

Even so, don’t let the summer theme limit you. This layout isn’t only for pool days. In fact, it works beautifully for birthdays, backyard BBQs, and even travel albums. The tiled design is flexible, so you can easily recreate it with any patterned papers in your stash.

Creating the Square Tiles

The original project calls for 2-1/8? squares. That size works fine, but what really matters is consistency. The layout shines as long as the tiles match in size.

Faster Cutting with the Square Punch

For that reason, I recommend the Creative Memories Square Punch, which cuts 1-3/4? squares. Although the size difference is small, the punch makes the process much faster and far more accurate. Rather than measuring and trimming each piece with a trimmer, you can punch out uniform squares with ease. As long as the measurements stay consistent, the design will look polished.

Stretch Your Papers

Mixing Bold and Subtle Patterns

In addition, this tiled design is an excellent way to use up scraps. You can mix bold prints with subtle patterns for balance. You might also try matting a few squares or layering them to add depth or mix in the shape punches if you have one(s) that fit your theme. Because the design adapts so easily to any collection, it becomes a layout you’ll return to again and again.

Alternatives for Cutting 12×12 Paper on the Diagonal

The Creative Memories Blog suggests folding your 12×12 paper in half on the diagonal and trimming with the 12-inch trimmer. While that method works, it does leave a crease down the center of the triangles. Personally, I prefer a cleaner look.

Instead, my go-to solution is to use an 18? ruler and handheld rotary trimmer. With these tools, you can make a smooth cut without folding the paper first. I demonstrate this technique during class so you can see it step by step. If you try it at home, practice on a scrap sheet first, and remember to be careful—the exposed blade is sharp!

A Layout for Every Album

Ultimately, what I love most about the Square Tiles Layout is its versatility. With the right paper choices, it works for every season and every story. You can begin with the Poolside collection or swap in papers from your stash. Either way, the result is a layout that looks polished and creative without being complicated.
