Scrapbook Live – Calming Pattern Chaos in Layouts

When a Good Sketch Feels Like Too Much

The original Creative Memories sample uses multiple layers, angled pieces, and lots of pattern changes. That creates movement and excitement and shows off all the lovely papers in the paper pack — but it can also compete with your photos if you’re not careful. Instead of copying the sample exactly, I treated the sketch as a starting point, not a rulebook.

How to Choose Photos That Work Best with High Energy Layouts

At the beginning of this week’s episode, I talk through the original sample layout and why it can feel visually busy at first glance. One simple change — removing just one of the paper patterns — can significantly reduce visual distraction and help the layout feel calmer and more cohesive.

We also dive into an often-overlooked part of layout planning: photo selection.

Some photos are naturally high energy. They have a lot happening in the background, strong contrast, or multiple focal points. When those types of photos are paired with a layout that already includes lots of patterns and layers, the result can feel overwhelming.

Using sample photos from a visit to the San Diego Zoo, I compare:

  • Photos with lots of background activity and visual noise
  • More up-close images with fewer distractions

You’ll see why calmer photos often work better on pattern-heavy layouts — and how choosing the right photos can make just as much difference as the paper you use.

Using a Border Maker Cartridge to Add Texture (Not Clutter)

One of my favorite ways to do this is with a Border Maker Cartridge (BMC). Borders are a perfect solution when you want to add detail without adding visual noise. Instead of layering more paper patterns, I used a BMC design to create textured edges and subtle layers that:

  • Break up large areas of cardstock
  • Add dimension
  • Keep the color story clean

You get all the interest of extra layers — without tipping the layout into “too much.” This is especially helpful on sketch-based designs that already have lots of pieces happening.

If you’ve ever loved a sketch but felt like the sample page was just too much, this week’s Scrapbook Live will show you how to make it work beautifully for your own albums.

Happy scrapping!
