The Technique
I am overrun with sports photos. Like OVERRUN! What I desperately need are different ways to showcase all of the glory that is year after year of youth sports. I love sport layouts that convey action and movement within the design of the page itself and determined that the millions of lacrosse photos I have of Cody could be cropped to showcase that running motion – a motion that often has him leaning one way or another in the photo.
This technique to crop photos on a slant is relatively simply – use a 4×6 piece of chipboard/pressed cardboard to create a template and then use the photo labeling pencil to draw the slanted crop line on the photo itself. I recommend practicing this technique with spare/extra/rejected photos before rendering it on your ‘must have’ photos. Getting the photos to work well in a line, creating almost a border effect, takes a bit of practice.
Once you get the hang of the technique, the sky is the limit on how you apply it. I have one suggestion for a layout design in the handout below, but it will be fun to see how others use it!
