Scrapbook Live: Choosing Papers with Confidence Using a Simple Single Page Layout

Welcome back to Scrapbook Live!

After taking a couple of weeks off for vacation, I wanted to ease back into creating with a layout that’s simple, adaptable and full of opportunities to talk about one of the topics I get asked about most often — choosing papers.

This week’s inspiration comes from a Creative Memories blog layout originally shared in 2019 that beautifully showcases a colorful paper collection. While the layout itself is straightforward, it opens the door to a conversation that’s much bigger than measurements or cutting instructions.

One of the questions I hear most often is:

“How do you decide which papers to use?”

The answer is rarely about following a formula. Instead, it’s about understanding the role each paper plays within your layout.

Some papers are meant to be the stars of the page. Others quietly support your photos. Some add energy and movement, while others create breathing room and balance. Learning to recognize those different roles can make paper selection feel much less overwhelming.

Think About…

As you’re looking through a paper pack, ask yourself:

  • Which paper do I want people to notice first?
  • Which papers will support my photos instead of competing with them?
  • Does this layout need more energy, or does it need a place for my eye to rest?

There isn’t one “right” answer. The best paper choices will always depend on your photos and the story you’re telling.
