I will be going LIVE on my Facebook page at 12:00pm PT on Friday, October 2, 2026. If you can’t join me for the FB Live, the recording will be available to watch later on Facebook, or you can find it on my YouTube Channel. I will also add it to this blog post along with a photo of my final project.

Who Needs Fabric When You Have Paper?

There is something especially satisfying about taking simple strips of paper and turning them into a completely different design. This week on Scrapbook Live, we’re creating a Modern Log Cabin Quilt Layout—a scrapbook page inspired by the classic log cabin quilt pattern.

This is one of those layouts that checks a lot of boxes for me: it works with almost any theme, it’s a great way to use scraps or leftover strips of designer paper, and you can completely change the look simply by changing your paper choices.

A Quilt-Inspired Scrapbook Page

The basic design starts with six 2″ x 12″ strips of paper. For my sample, I used three pairs of coordinating papers, flipping one strip from each pair to the reverse side. You could also use six completely different strips, making this an easy design to pull together from your scrap stash. Non-directional patterns will be the easiest to work with for this technique.

Once the strips are arranged side-by-side, we’ll make one long diagonal cut and then rearrange the pieces to create the modern log cabin pattern. It looks much more complicated than it actually is!

Bringing Back the 18″ Ruler and Rotary Trimmer

A couple of weeks ago during our Virtual Crop warm-up, I showed you how I use an 18″ ruler with a handheld rotary trimmer to make a long diagonal cut across a 12″ piece of paper.

If you decided to add an extra-long ruler to your supplies after that episode, I wanted to give you another project where that combination comes in handy. For this layout, we’ll use the same tools to make the diagonal cut through our paper strips. I add one new product to the line up – a light-grip adhesive mat that is typically used with a cutting machine.

Don’t have those tools? You can still make the layout. Simply mark your diagonal with a ruler and pencil and cut along the line with scissors or your trimmer.

Make It Your Own

Once the quilt-inspired background is assembled, the rest of the page is very flexible. The layout is designed for two 4″ x 6″ photos with coordinating mats, with room to add border elements and embellishments to fit your theme.

And as for which Creative Memories collection I’ll be using when we make it together on Friday? I haven’t decided yet! That may be a Friday decision—which is actually part of the fun with a versatile layout like this.

Join me for Scrapbook Live and we’ll put the Modern Log Cabin Quilt Layout together step-by-step. Grab some paper strips, your favorite collection—or your scrap stash—and come scrapbook with me!
