A Little Sketch Practice Before the Virtual Crop
Creative Memories’ September Virtual Crop is coming up, and this week on Scrapbook Live, we’re going to get ourselves warmed up and ready to create! We’ll be working with a Creative Memories Virtual Crop sketch from November 2023 and using it to practice some of the skills—and creative thinking—that come in handy when you’re working from a scrapbook sketch.
Sketches: Suggestions, Not Rules
One of the things I love about sketches is that they give you a starting point without dictating exactly what your finished layout needs to look like. You can follow one closely, make a few small adjustments, or use it simply as inspiration for something completely different.
During Scrapbook Live, we’ll talk about how I look at a sketch and break it down into manageable pieces before I start cutting my paper. We’ll also look at places where you can make adjustments based on your photos, supplies and personal scrapbooking style.
Technique Training: Cutting Large Squares on the Diagonal
Fold/Cut – May leave a folded line on your paper
- Fold a large square in half diagonally to create a triangle.
- Place the folded triangle in your trimmer with the point centered on the dashed cutting line.
- Cut using the blade of your choice.
12″ Ruler, Pencil, Scissors – no fold lines, but requires steady hand for cut
- Use the ruler to find and lightly mark the center point of your paper.
- Draw a light pencil line from one corner to the center point. Repeat from the opposite corner to complete the diagonal line.
- Cut along the pencil line with scissors.
18″ Ruler with Handheld Rotary Trimmer – no fold line, but requires extra tools
- Position the 18″ ruler along the diagonal where you want to cut.
- Hold the ruler firmly in place and carefully guide the handheld rotary trimmer along its edge to cut the paper.
